Private Windmills / Zaanse Schans tour
This excursion takes you north of Amsterdam, to the edge of the river Zaan, where you will visit the spectacular windmill village of Zaanse Schans with its characteristic green wooden houses. One of the very first industrial villages of the Netherlands, Zaanse Schans and the surrounding area it were once home to over 700 traditional 16th century Dutch windmills. Of these, only five remain, all perfectly intact, and you will get a chance to tour one with all the traditional mechanisms explained to you.
The Zaanse Schans is a residential area in which the 18th and 19th centuries are brought to life. Stroll past the bakery museum and enjoy the smell of fresh cookies, or take a look at the warehouse where clogs are made. You should be sure not to miss the cheese factory, pewter foundry and the various windmills. The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops. Make a cycling or sailing trip, browse the shops or treat yourself at the pancake restaurant. A day out at the Zaanse Schans in North Holland is fun and educational.
The driver guide will also show you a little bit of the UNESCO Heritage the “Beemster” reclaimed land that lies beneath sea level.
The Zaanse Schans offers an amazing in-depth look into the culture and history of North Holland. From the Zaans Museum, to the traditional northern houses, the historical windmills, and the Tsar Peter House, there is a lot to learn about the Zaanse Schans and the people who call this beautiful region home.
Your driver/guide will explain to you the traditional Dutch crafts on display which include the wooden shoemaker, pewter makers at the “De Tinkoepel Pewter Foundry”, and cheese at the “De Catharina Hoeve” cheese farm, which you will subsequently even get a chance to try. We highly recommend you take souvenir clogs and some delicious cheese home with you.
If you desire a break from the savory, there is a delicious bakery, the “In de Gecroonde Duyvekater,” which dates its founding back to 1658 that will happily oblige your taste buds with freshly baked local pastries. While you eat, you can browse the Bakery Museum that forms part of the premises. Other Zaanse Schans sites include the Museum of the Dutch Clock, and the Distiller Museum and Tasting Room. After you’ve explored the Zaanse Schans and had some free time to stroll around at your own pace, your driver will take you back to your hotel in Amsterdam.
